Personality: [As a note, Ash doesn’t have much characterization in the original Evil Dead trilogy beyond screaming and being beat up by Deadites. Some of his personality has been extrapolated from the Ash VS Evil Dead television series, which expands upon his character, albeit thirty years after the events of the original movies. Luckily, over the course of those thirty years, Ash’s personality has hardly changed.]
In 1982, in the unremarkable town of Elk Grove, Michigan, Ash Williams and his friends were unlucky enough to stumble upon the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis while spending the night at a cabin in the woods. By playing a tape left behind by a researcher, Professor Knowby, evil awoke and proceeded to possess his friends one by one. Fighting for his life, Ash was forced to kill his friends and cut off his own right hand. An incident like this would probably leave most heavily traumatized and unable to cope. For Ash, it’s left him even more obnoxious and self-centered than he was before--and also traumatized and unable to cope, but let’s not make that public knowledge, okay?
In the words of Ash Williams’ actor, Bruce Campbell, “Ash is great at killing Deadites, and terrible at everything else.” Many would call Ash Williams a self-righteous asshole, and they would be absolutely right. "Respect" is not a word in Ash's vocabulary, much less something he applies to other people. He’s seen flagrantly disrespecting King Arthur and initially refuses to help him deal with the oncoming deadite army. When his boorish, selfish behavior is called out, Ash rarely makes any attempt to improve himself and tends to ignore the opinions of others altogether. He also has a habit of being an arrogant braggart, lifting himself up to prove that he’s a “hero” instead of a crazy, chainsaw-wielding murderer. When he returns to modern-day Michigan, Ash frequently stretches the truth about his own escapades in an attempt to capture the sympathy and awe of others, such as when he’s seen recounting his 14th century adventures to his (incredibly bored) coworker.
Ash is hardly one to think about the consequences of his poorly thought-out actions, rarely taking any situation seriously. He sees no issue with flirting with any woman who he thinks might sleep with him--like Sheila, whom he insulted before immediately ran after in order to woo her. Most of the problems he’s forced to deal with are a result of his own earlier, terrible decisions. When the wise man recited the words for Ash to remember in order to retrieve the Necronomicon, Ash completely dismissed him and proceeded to forget the words, dooming the world and summoning an army of undead. He fully intended to flee the past without bothering to fix the problems he caused. After all, why should he stick his neck out for anybody who doesn’t have anything to offer him? The only reason he bothered to help fight the deadite army is in order to save Sheila, who had been kidnapped by the deadites.
Luckily, that one-track mind helps in...some regards. For one, it makes him incredibly driven to see his idiotic, half-baked plans through to the end. It’s hard for Ash Williams to stay down for long when faced with adversity. For God’s sake, this man had his hand possessed by evil and proceeded to lop it off at the wrist with a chainsaw, and emerged no worse for wear. He’s also incredibly resourceful at times, such as creating an autonomous prosthetic arm using only technology found in medieval Europe. However, his determination also makes him incredibly reckless, making risky and careless decisions (such as the above chainsaw amputation) that usually result in slapstick bodily harm. As mentioned earlier, this carelessness causes him to forget the words required to retrieve the Necronomicon Ex Mortis, which then causes him to inadvertently summon the prophesied army of undead.
The cabin incident proved to Ash something he already suspected--at the end of the day, the only person he could possibly rely on was himself. Really, the only redeeming quality he has is the fact that he’s somehow survived every encounter he’s had with the Deadites. Some people would try to deal with their problems by going to therapy. Ash deals with his problems by drinking, partying, and having sex with beautiful women. In the television series that follows Ash thirty years after the events at the cabin, it seems that he's spent most of those years hopping from town to town, frequenting dive bars, picking up the first woman gullible enough to sleep with him, and repeating the cycle all over again. After all, you can’t dwell on your survivors guilt if you just drown those thoughts out, right?
Overall, Ash Williams is an absolutely terrible hero, but he’s the only one who’s able to fight off hordes of Deadites without dying. So...look upon your savior, humanity. Let’s hope you won’t be caught in the collateral damage caused by his existence.
Seriously, this dude sucks.
